🏔️ Langtang Lirung: A Mountain That Remembers
This is Langtang Lirung, standing above Langtang Valley: beautiful, powerful, and deeply connected to the stories of our people.
In the 2015 earthquake, an enormous avalanche came down from these slopes and devastated Langtang Village, taking many precious lives. The mountain that had always been a symbol of beauty suddenly became a symbol of grief.
And now, more than a decade later, the Himalayas have spoken again.
The recent Bhotekoshi–Trishuli disaster, which began with a catastrophic mountain collapse and avalanche from Langtang Lirung again in the Himalayan region, swept through communities in Rasuwa and beyond. The scale of the disaster has been described as a “Himalayan tsunami.”
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Balen Shah described the disaster as more than a local tragedy a warning to the world. He asked whether humanity has truly heard the warning coming from the Himalayas and connected today’s catastrophe with the growing global climate crisis.
And standing here beneath Langtang Lirung, those words feel different.
The mountain is still beautiful.
The snow is still shining.
The clouds still move across its summit.
But behind that beauty are the memories of 2015, the devastation of 2026, and a warning that reaches far beyond Nepal.
The Himalayas give the world water, life, biodiversity, culture and beauty. But they are also among the places most exposed to a rapidly changing climate and unstable mountain environment.
Perhaps this is what the mountain is telling us:
Do not only look at our beauty.
Listen to our warning.
🏔️ Langtang Lirung — beautiful enough to admire, powerful enough to humble us, and fragile enough that the world must pay attention.
The Himalayas are speaking.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a nationwide high alert due to a severe low-pressure weather system bringing extreme rainfall across Nepal through September 28.
These heavy downpours bring a critical risk of flash floods, landslides, and high-altitude weather shifts along mountain transit corridors.
