Kanchenjunga South And North Base Camp Trekking


Kanchenjunga, the thrilling place of Nepal not found elsewhere just below the looming Mt Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters). This area is declared as the gift of the Earth full of alpine grass lands, rocky outcrops, dense temperate and sub-tropical forests and low river valley. It is situated north in north eastern part of Nepal border by Tibet, China and India. This enchanting area offers the excellent display of flowering glory of rhododendrons, orchids, lilies, primula and many other flowers. The must-see place of this region is Kanchenjunga Conservation Area spread in an area of 2,035 square Kilometers. The area has a rich diversity of wildlife including snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer red panda and others. Impheyan, pheasant, red-billed blue mangpie, shy drongo are the major birds found here.

Kanchenjunga area is the inhabitant of Sherpas who have different culture and tradition from those of Solukhumbu district. Rais, Chhetris, Brahmans are other ethnic group of this region. Monasteries, chhortens, temples, prayer walls are the representation of this area. So Kanchenjunga is the most popular trekking destination which will fire up the imagination of everyone.

Day 01: Kathmandu, 1360m

You arrive in Kathmandu and are transferred to the hotel. A pre-trek briefing will be scheduled to discuss the trekking program and co-ordinate any last-minute arrangements.

Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing

Today we explore Kathmandu on an organized sightseeing tour. This will include a visit to the Bodhnath Stupa, one of the biggest Buddhist shrines in the world. We also visit Pashupatinath, located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River and home to the most famous Hindu temple in the country. Here we will see Hindu holy men (saddhus) and pilgrims performing ritual bathing, and occasionally, funeral pyres burning on the Ghats.
The early afternoon will be free to relax in the hotel garden or visit Thamel for last minute shopping. You will be supplied with your trek departure information in the afternoon.

Day 03/4.Drive from Kathmandu to Basantpur via Dharan(428m.), Dhankuta(1158m.) and Hille(1822m.) by bus:

It will be a long driving journey as we will drive about 2 days. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 05.Trek from Basantpur to Chauki (2400m.)- 6 Hours:

Today, the trail follows gentle ascent and descent route as well. The path is covered by rhododendron forests. If the sky is clear, we will enjoy the panoramic view of Mount Makalu and Kanchenjunga himal. Overnight at Tented camp. B.L.D

Day 06.Trek from chauki to Gupha Pokhari (2940m.) to Gurja Gaon(2145m.)- 7 Hours:

While trekking through this way, we pass through rhododendron forests. At a point, we come across a pass situated at 3000 meter. There is a pond at the Gupha Pokhari where prayer flags and Buddhist mani wall can be seen. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 07.Trek from Gurja Goan to Dovan (730 m.) – 6 Hours:

Today, the trails descend up to Dovan. En route we pass through jungle and villages. We trek through terraces as crops grown here are wheat, maize, rice, millet, potatoes and so on. Dovan is a village situated at low elevation between two streams. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 08.Trek from Dovan to Mitlung (921m.)- 6 Hours:

Crossing a suspension bridge over Tamur River, we follow quite flat route. We trek along the bank of Tamur Koshi through paddy fields. From time to time, we cross through small jungles of cardamom plants and other natural vegetation. We will see some small village stretching at a far distance. The inhabited area of this part is occupied by Brahmins, Chhetris and Limbus. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 09.Trek from Mitlung to Chirwa(1171m.)- 7 Hours:

The path to follow is quite narrow and passes through jungle mainly covered with cardamom plants and other vegetation. We will also see the small gardens of orange on your way. We cross through some small streams while trekking. This day, our trek is through ascent and descent paths. We walk along the more flat land. Chirwa is a small town where you find small lodges and camping site with local shops. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 10.Trek from Chirwa to Sekathum(1635m.)- 6 Hours:

Our trek passes through a small jungle along with the bank of the river. We find the plants of cardamom and other different vegetation. The trail normally ascends and descends as well. We cross a small hanging bridge before we reach Sekhathum. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 11.Trek from Sekathum to Amjilosa (2510m.)- 5 Hours:

The first one and half-hour we trek through normally flat land. Then our trail goes steeply ascent up to Amjilasa. Amjilassa is small village with few houses and yak herds with local shops where you find minimal supplies. These shops are also called Bhattis and teashops. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 12.Trek to Gyabla – 5 Hours:

Again, we hike upward river bank. Pass through the densely forest of mainly bamboo, fir and rhododendrons. Eventually reach a small stone house by the river. Then climb up again crossing a few small bridges. We will find that the river drops steeply with many waterfalls and pools. Another short uphill walk takes us to the Tibetan settlement of Gyabla. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 13.Trek from Gyable to Ghunsa (3468m.)-6 Hours:

The trails pass through jungle. We will see Gunsa River down the trail. The trail passes through few human settlements and it is clearly visible that their life style and culture has been inherited from Tibet. We pass through terrace fields where potato, wheat, barley, buck are grown. The local traders are involved in export-import business in Tibet. The traders go to India for trade activities during the winter season. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 14.Rest day at Ghunsa for acclimatization:

Today we take a rest in order to acclimatize and excursion in and around the Ghunsa. Gunsa is also rich with Tibetan and Buddhist culture. Ghunsa is relatively larger town. It is inhabited by Tibetan people. Mainly the women are involved in carpet weaving profession. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 15.Trek from Ghunsa to Kambachen (4124m – 7 Hours:

The trail makes a gradual ascent along the south bank of the Gunsa Khola, then crosses a boulder strewn flood plain and crosses back to Rambuk Kharka on the north side of the river. Once on the opposite side, the trail passes a waterfall then makes a short, steep ascent to a very unstable slope. It’s a passage across the slide, with loose footing, a steep fall to the river and lots of tumbling football-sized rocks. Beyond the slide, the trail drops to the single locked hut at Lakep, then traverses to Khambachen, a Tibetan settlement of about a dozen houses at 4040m. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 16.Trek from Kambachen to Lhonak (4780m.)- 7 Hours:

Today, the trail climbs gradually through open rocky fields to Ramtang at 4240m, then across moraines north-west of the Kanchenjunga Glacier. Lhonak, at 4790m, is near a dry lake bed on an open, sandy plain; water is scarce here. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 17.Trek from Lhonak to pangpema (5152m.)-4 Hours:

From Lhonak, the trail ascends gradually across the plain, and then gets a bit steeper as it follows the moraine. We will drop off the moraine and follow the bottom of the valley to avoid the steeper section. The views are dramatic, but we will not see Kanchenjunga or Wedge Peak until we are near Peng Pema. The spectacular main peak of Kanchenjunga, and a panorama of other peaks that make up one of the largest mountain masses in the world, tower over the single roofless hut at Pang Pema. Day 18.Trek from Pangpema to Kanchanjunga (North) Base Camp (5280m.) to Lhonak- 6 hours:

Here, we will enjoy the snow capped mountains and Kanchenjunga glacier. There are gorges of mountain glacier from water flows all the time. During the middle of the day, the scene of falling avalanches captivates you completely, the return to Lhonak. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 19.Trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa- 7 Hours:

Today, we trek in descending path crossing the jungle along the river Kambachen. At a point, we have to cross a wooden bridge as well. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 20.Trek from Ghunsa to Mirgin La (4583m.)- 7 Hours:

Going ascend, we pass through the less thick jungle. Here also we will see the mani walls and prayer flags hanging over the tree. While trekking we see the view of various beautiful mountains. We observe the different animals like mountain goats and yaks grazing over the hills. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 21.Trek from Mirgin La to Tseram (3725m.)- 6 Hours:

Today, we trek through almost desert like area and some places we cross are stony trail. The path is ascent from Mirgin La to Tseram. On the path, we will see Lapsang La glacier, Mirgin La glacier and snow-capped mountains. There are very few stone roof houses at Tseram and yak huts. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 22.Trek from Tseram to Oktang (5225m.)- 7 Hours:

Today, we trek through moraines. On the trail, we will see Yalung glacier and Lapsang glacier. We will also see mountain goats as we cross through desert like area. The view of snow-covered mountains and Kanchenjunga is quite magnificent. Walking through this trail is full of adventure. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 23.Excursion to Kanchanjunga Base Camp (South) – 5 Hours:

We will have to walk through moraines and strenuous rocky path. Trekking this day is quite adventurous as you have to walk along the glacier. We will mountain goats and yaks. This day we cross Oktang glacier. The panoramic view of Kanchenjunga and Mount Jannu with other different peaks captivates us completely. Some parts of the area touch the neighboring country India. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 24Trek from Oktang to Tseram (3725m.)- 7 Hours:

We trek following stream alongside the moraines of Yalung Glacier. Trekking through jungle of juniper is required. The path is quite loose and rocky. There can be found mani walls and prayer flags hanging over the tree. Along the way, we will see difficult route of Lapsang La pass at a distance. There are very few stone roof houses at Tseram and yak huts. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 25.Trek from Tseram to Yamphudin (2090m.)- 8 Hours:

Today, the first part of the trekking goes along the bank of the river, Simbua Khola. We have to walk through jungle. On the way, we will see the landslide at some places. The trail normally ascends up to Lamite Bhanjyang and then descends to Yamphudin crossing the small river. Yamphudin is a mixed community of Sherpas, Limbus, Rais and Gurungs. Among the corn and rice fields of the village there are a school and some shops with minimal supplie. B.L.D

Day 26.Trek from Yamphudin to Khebang (1740m.)- 7 Hours:

In the beginning, we descend crossing the Omje Khola up to halfway. Now we ascend through the jungle of cardamom and orchid plants. We pass a small village where we will find different human settlements, small thatched roof houses and local shops with minimal supplies. From here, the trails is quite ascent up to Khebang Danda and then we trek in descending order to Khebang village. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 27.Trek from Khebang to Thorpu (1500m.)- 8 Hours:

Today, the trail starts descending to Jorepul and then begins to ascend. We also trek along the flat and low land crossing paddy fields and thatched roof houses. Thorpu is a town where transportation facility is available. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 28.Trek from Thorpu to Gopetar (2250m.)- 6 Hours:

First of all, we ascend through the small villages up to the last destination, Gopetar. It is a town where is found small restaurants, tea shops and other local shops. From here, we are picked up by bus to reach Phidim to Illam. Overnight at Tented Camp. B.L.D

Day 29/30. Drive from Gopetar to Kathmandu via Phidim (1264m.) and Ilam (1229m.).

Overnight at hotel. B.B. Drive to Kathmandu. On The last day This is the free day and you can use it for your shopping. In the evening you will drive you for farewell dinner with cultural dance

Day 31: Katmandu Departure
